There is always an exciting thing to make the first collection for the fashion brand that has been already established. It can be like walking on thin ice, the hit or miss! We have witnessed that some of the first collections were lately not so great accepted from the fashion audience, like the one for Chanel by Virginie Viard or not so long time ago, the first collection by Hedi Slimane for Celine! Oh, talking about Celine, the former designer that had worked for Celine before the Phoebe Philo was Daniel Lee. And he has debuted his first collection for the famous Italian brand Bottega Veneta!
The collection was Ready to Wear for Fall 2019 in February at Milan Fashion Week. It was definitely the brave choice a hard one to pull. They didn´t wait currently time when lots of Resort collection appear. Resort collections are not so strict and they are an easy way to experiment and to introduce the designer with his own aesthetic and with the aesthetic of the brand. But in Bottega Veneta, they have decided to give Daniel Lee the chance to make the first collection with all its risks!
Bottega Veneta is all about the fine and luxurious leather design. And just like many other Italian fashion brands, Bottega Veneta likes to be kept in the classic and chic horizons with the accents on the craftsman. Well, this collection was that and even more. The experimental effect was strong so as the first look sent down the runway was the Bottega Veneta version of a Little Black Dress with the soft leather in the texture and in the midi length.
The edgy accents were kept on the horizon with the coats that were in the connection with the wool fabrics so they appeared like the crossovers between the coats and the sweaters. Just the one in the orange appeared really like a well-constructed coat at first sight when it was the perfectly knitted sweater.
The real deal when we talk about the coats were definitely the ones in the leather. Leather as a material, you would assume, doesn´t have plenty of the final realizations. But Daniel Lee has proved wrong. His coats have had that edgy spin and the spirit of the motorcycle vibes, but in the textures that were built like a mosaic, they appeared really so experimental rich and promising. Here we can see the brave side of Lee as a designer. He pushes his own vision respecting the fashion brand philosophy, yet he offers something fresh and different!
The new spirit was brought on the skirts in the same mannerism like on the leather coats, giving them more a robust kind of character. And then as you think that this everything was a little too much, Daniel Lee goes to another spectrum, showing us his form of the classic. The chiffon sleek dresses were in that kind of tone just like those made of the cozy wool. Low key yet elegant and refined. For everyone there was something, and we can not wait for the next collection to see what Daniel Lee has in his sleeve next for Bottega Veneta!
What do you think about this collection? Do you like this style? Which look or piece do you like the most?
Thank you for your attention!
