Wes Gordon has been the creative director of Carolina Herrera fashion house for a while and he has formed his own signature attitude in the designing. This kind of different approach could be sensed in his last two collections where he combines successfully the aspects of more traditional CH style approach with the modern and fresh spin. Wes Gordon has built designer courage, no doubt to that, so his collections for Carolina Herrera are always kind of different yet so very Herrera. How he manages that, he has shown in the latest Resort 2020 collection.
The first thing that catches the eye is the silhouette that is shorter than the "traditional" Carolina Herrera one and not just that. It is more structured and opulent. Wes Gordon likes to play with the volume of the pieces so he puts the opulent touch to it in almost every ensemble. That is the modern twist to the usual aesthetic of Herrera that we know.
Another different kind of vibe is the length. The length is shorter, so in this collection, we have plenty of mini-dresses or short lines in general. The first few looks from this collection that was presented in the editorial form, are all about that. Playful dresses in mini versions with vibrant colors and happy floral prints or more elegant ones with ruffled textures are really something quite different than what we usually could expect from Herrera style.
Even the famous white blouse and glamorous gown concept are in the interpretation by Wes Gordon rather re-constructed or deconstructed, if you prefer. The stiff collar white blouse was refreshed with the bell-sleeves featured with embroidered logo line horizontally on the top of the mini skirt enriched with floral prints. Or more homogenous version was offered in the all-white look with the typically CH white shirt and laced textured flare pants. What a great inversion of the already known fashion codes!
The youthful and contemporary spirit was kept in the same lane with the baby-doll mini dress and big bow on the bustier area. Or the polka dots versions of black and white combination on the midi-dresses that looked so urban and chic thanks to the much easier and fluid textures. And just to hint us the "back to the roots" moment with flamenco ruffled sweeping dress. And the total break-down to the future with refined embellished dresses on silver with the interventions of the tiny lace features.
This collection is definitely a totally new visual twist of the already known Herrera aesthetic. The playful and unbothered approach with the impeccable style in the realization makes this collection another breakthrough and another hit for Wes Gordon! He has shown confidence and respect to the house he creates for, and yet managed to find his own signature. And that is definitely something worth an appreciation!
What do you think about this collection? Do you like this new visual approach of Carolina Herrera? Which look do you like the most?
