There is no doubt that Calvin Klein is a total American brand! Saluting the minimalism and casual notes, making the all-black staples as the main pieces of his aesthetic, you know what to expect when you mention Calvin Klein design. Well, at least that was before Raf Simons has come. The designer which is known for his minimalistic design, even the vibrant and iconoclastic design post-John Galliano era in Dior, was toned down to the minimalistic visual gaze.
So why his aesthetic in Calvin Klein has become edgier, vivid and lustrous with the poly-featured points?! Maybe the pressure is less and the imperative of being edgy is not a must so his inner inspiration animal can be loosed up serving us the most outrageous fashion metonyms inspired by American culture!
And here we have got the answer to the doubt from above. America has happened to Raf Simons and he seems to enjoy every bit of this New World iconism. In the Spring/Summer 2019 collection he was inspired by the movie scene in America. It is funny how one-dimensional his projection to this motive is. The movies like Jaws or Graduate were the obvious theme that inspired Raf Simons for this collection.
This fact was inevitable because of the Jaws poster printed on the t-shirts, the diversion of scuba diving gear. Or the Graduate togas and hats which were theatrically presented. Why this kind of movies, why these movies of all of the possible ones, were perfect in the eye of Raf Simons?! Well, the one is horror as celebrates the beachwear and the other is drama with typical classic pieces.
The oversized jackets, the light voluminous shrunk-y dresses, the robust knitwear on the top of the delicate long skirts, the vivid prints all over the place but still harmonized with the plain layout in white or black, the by toga-inspired coats with the again imperative of being voluminous enough. Seems like all of these segments have appeared really well balanced and in the style cohesion.
Is it minimalistic?! No! Do we like it? Yes! Because it reflects another face of Calvin Klein, it shows the evolution of design which in fashion is a must! Is it the CK spirit still kept?! Yes, in the polished and well-synchronized piece which on the micro-level work really perfectly and on the maxi-perspective look eclectic, fresh, bold and innovative! Maybe it is a small step for fashion design but big for Calvin Klein, and uber-big for Raf Simons whose aesthetic continues to surprise us with each new collection!
What do you think about this collection? What do you think about the movie's references built and incorporated into this collection?
Thank you for the attention!
