Looking back at the Haute Couture collections lately, we can´t help but think that Haute Couture, the real and well, if we could say the typical Couture collections have been going through the change. The everywhere presented trend of the new casual-ism has been emerging successfully not only in the high fashion Ready To Wear collections but in the Couture collections too! It is difficult to keep on a high extravagant level of the couture style in today social media frenzy and Instagram "starlets" who make a big business advertising to their followers easy and casual wear. So where in all of this is Haute Couture?!
The answer to that question could be hidden in the latest Sonia Rykiel Fall 2018 Haute Couture collection. Not only this collection was the first one of that kind for the new designer Julie de Libran but there is also one thing which could be a pioneering occasion for the couture niche. If we take a look at this collection we will see the lack of that extravagant and high glamorous details. This effect was toned down with the loosed up masculine items like the uber big coats worn on the naked body, the too long sleeves hanging there giving an extra messy effect, the texture of this whole items presented here which is far from typically Couture.
The monochrome factor to it all in the mostly black color has only undertoned the "underdog" spirit of this collection. The robustly knitted pieces were here too, just to accentuate the everyday spirit of this collection. The casual boost has got its climax towards the very end with the washed out jeans under the deconstructed gown. This oxymoronic nature of this ensemble captures the whole attitude and feeling of this collection.
But what this says about the Couture nature in general of today? Is it still a relevant thing or it is a total "passe"? Well, the case is that this anti-couture spirit is the part of the fashion and its own evolution. It is an artistic vision and the attempt for fashion to re-evaluate its own standards, to move on, to be exciting and glorifying! And if that means the loss of the WOW effect, fashion is gladly doing even that! And in that fact, we can see the power and strength of the fashion. It can bury itself and re-born itself again, giving us the best of itself! And that thing is the one we need to appreciate!
What do you think about this collection? What do you think about the casual note in the Couture collections?
Thank you for the attention!
